Martinez, Contra Costa County
Martinez has been the seat of Contra Costa County since 1850. It grew up as a ferry landing on the Carquinez Strait, the crossing point for gold seekers heading to the mines, and ferries ran to Benicia until a bridge opened in 1962. An oil refinery has operated on the east side of town since 1915. The waterfront is now a regional park and marina.
